Compassionate care, tailored support

The Department of Palliative Medicine at Christian Medical College, Vellore, was established in response to the pressing need for comprehensive and holistic care for patients with advanced cancer. In India, approximately seventy percent of cancer patients are diagnosed at advanced or incurable stages, where the focus shifts from curative treatment to symptom management and quality of life. These patients often experience challenging physical symptoms, particularly toward the end of life. Alongside the physical toll, patients and their families grapple with financial burdens, caregiver stress, social stigma, and spiritual distress, making the need for palliative care crucial.
Over time, the department has extended its services beyond cancer care to address suffering in other chronic progressive illnesses, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease (ILD), renal failure, and more. The department is dedicated to providing whole-person care, acknowledging that effective palliative care encompasses more than just physical relief. By integrating physical, emotional, social, and spiritual support, the department aims to improve the quality of life for both patients and their families. The Palliative Medicine Department is staffed by an interdisciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and chaplains, all working together to deliver personalized care.
